As many of you know, Maryland, along with ten other states* is receiving federal funding to plant trees. The state plans to plant 1 million trees within four years and it has already completed the first 152,000 plantings using inmate labor. The trees have been planted across eight State parks, including Central, Southern and Eastern Maryland.
Local government has been working alongside the federal government in this project and they are offering more incentives to homeowners and/or individuals who will plant.
Governor O’Malley recently launched Marylanders Plant Trees, through which citizens can receive $25 discount coupons for the purchase of native trees costing $50 or more from participating nurseries across the state. Whether taking advantage of the coupon program or not, citizens who plant new trees are asked to use the state’s new website, www.trees.maryland.gov to register the trees they’ve planted and calculate their benefits.
*Other states receiving federal funding to plant trees are: California, New York, Florida, Colorado, Utah, Ohio, Texas, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virgina

If your not from Baltimore you might not understand. It’s Baltimore pride, I guess, and that is why it has ended up on our Baltimore Tree Blog. Maybe the easiest way to explain is to tell you to watch Hairspray (2007), starring John Travolta as big-haired Edna Turnblad in 1960s Baltimore.
The dates for HonFest 2009 are June 13-14 2009. There will be a best-dressed competition and the theme this year is, “What is a Hon?”
